Play the music you’ve always wanted to play

Once you’ve learned the basics and a few melodies, lessons gradually shift toward the genre that inspired you to pick up the guitar.

(Rock, Pop, Folk, Jazz, Metal, and more).

Along the way, you’ll work on genre-specific exercises to build hand strength and fretboard knowledge.

Curriculum

A typical beginner lesson is usually split into three parts.

â‘ Note reading.

②Basic Techniques.

â‘¢Repertoire development

These parts can be added or removed depending on the student's needs and goals, however these are the standard parts of an OGS lesson.

â‘ Note Reading

There are two textbooks recommended for studying note reading:

Hal Leonard Guitar Method

The Hal Leonard Guitar Method is a great starting point for students with no prior experience reading music.

It introduces note reading on the treble clef using the first few frets of the guitar, and gradually covers basic rhythms and notation in a clear, beginner-friendly way.

Berklee Press: A Modern Method for Guitar

Students with prior music experience may find the Hal Leonard Guitar Method a bit slow.

In those cases, we often move on to Berklee Press: A Modern Method for Guitar, which progresses at a faster pace and covers a wider range of notation, including chords, multiple keys, and different positions on the neck.

Many students begin with Hal Leonard and naturally transition to the Berklee method as they progress.

â‘¡Fundamentals and Technique

OGS Basics

Beginners often struggle to find a clear, step-by-step path to learning the guitar.

OGS Basics is an original method that covers essential chords, scales, and finger exercises, designed to set students up for long-term success.

Built from over 20 years of real-world teaching experience, this method focuses on the core fundamentals needed for modern guitar playing.

â‘¢Repertoire Development

Developing repertoire puts everything learned in the first to parts of the lesson into practical use.  The focus of this section is to learn songs which a student wants to be able to play.  The goal is to develop a collection of songs that the student can then perform on their own time for enjoyment, or to perform for others.

The student then also has the option to perform at one of two recitals held every year.  Recitals are a great way to develop confidence, and solidify everything that they have been working during their period of time as a student.

“Ryan is an excellent and patient teacher. As an adult student wanting to play for fun, he helped me lock down the basics so that I can learn on my own. Ryan was so amazing that he continued to teach me over Skype when he moved to Japan." - 40 year old banker
