What is a "Jam Session"?

A jam session is a casual music event where musicians come together to play familiar tunes and improvise in a group setting. It’s a great way to explore musical ideas, build confidence, and connect with other musicians.
In Tokyo, jam sessions happen every day, across almost every genre imaginable.
But here’s the catch.
For many guitarists, the idea of just showing up to a jam session can feel intimidating.
Not knowing the songs, the format, or what’s expected can make even experienced players hesitate to take that first step.
Who this workshop is for
This workshop is for Ontario Guitar Studio students who want to attend jazz/funk/blues guitar jam sessions, but maybe are worried about not having certain fundamentals together.
This will teach the student the fundamentals needed, as well as build the confidence to be able to play with others in a Jam session setting using a single song for each workshop.
Here’s how the workshop flows over three classes:
One song chosen (Summertime, Isn't She Lovely, etc.)
Class 1
Learn Melody
Learn Chords
Class 2
Melody and chords review
scales practice
Improv practice
Starting and Ending tunes
Group session playthrough
Class 3
Full Session (/w Full Band)
Each class is 55 minutes and includes setup + tear down.
"I'm a strong believer that playing with others is the key to unlocking not only
your ability on the guitar, but it's a genuine way to connect with other people regardless of your background." - Ryan

Fees
“Ryan is an excellent and patient teacher. As an adult student wanting to play for fun, he helped me lock down the basics so that I can learn on my own. Ryan was so amazing that he continued to teach me over Skype when he moved to Japan." - 40 year old banker
