If your child has shown interest in music, you might be wondering: āWould online guitar lessons work for my kid?ā
The short answer? Absolutely ā as long as the setup is right and the lessons are tailored to your child.
In this post, Iāll walk you through what online guitar lessons for kids look like, what kind of progress to expect, and how I support young learners in a fun and structured way.
š” Why Parents Choose Online Lessons
There are a lot of reasons families turn to online guitar lessons:
šÆ ConvenienceĀ ā No commute, no rushing through traffic
š Language optionsĀ ā English-speaking teachers can be hard to find locally
š§ Comfort & familiarityĀ ā Some kids feel more confident learning from home
And for families living abroad or in non-English-speaking areas, online lessons can be a great way to support both musical growthĀ and language exposureĀ at the same time.
š§ How Online Lessons for Kids Are Different
Teaching young children online takes a different approach than teaching adults. Hereās what I focus on:
Short, clear instructionsĀ with plenty of repetition
Fun, familiar songsĀ to keep engagement high
Visual cues and screen sharingĀ for easier understanding
Interactive call-and-response playingĀ to keep them active, not passive
I structure lessons around attention span, not pressure. The goal is to make each session feel like a fun challenge ā not a chore.
š„ What My Lessons Look Like
When your child joins one of my online lessons, hereās what you can expect:
ā Lessons in English, Japanese, or a mix of both
š Shared PDFs and digital materials, often with easy-to-read visual aids
šµ Real-time guidance on rhythm, finger placement, and technique
š© Lesson recap messages to help parents stay in the loop
Whether your child is a complete beginner or already playing a few songs, I customize the pace and materials to fit their personality and learning style.
š What Youāll Need for Online Guitar Lessons
To get started, hereās what your child will need:
šø Basic Equipment
A guitarĀ ā acoustic or electric, whichever your child prefers(The S. Yairi Mini-Guitar is a fantastic option for a child-size instrument)
A tunerĀ ā clip-on or app-based
A pickĀ (or just fingers if preferred)
š» Tech Setup
A tablet, laptop, or desktopĀ with a webcam
A stable internet connection
Zoom accessĀ (Iāll send a clickable link by email ā no need to install anything!)
Thatās it! No need to overbuy ā weāll focus on making the most of what you already have.
š What Kind of Progress Can You Expect?
Every child is different, but hereās a rough outline of what progress can look like:
In the first few weeks, most kids will typically:
Learn how to hold the guitar properly
Play simple melodies using 1 or 2 strings
Begin basic rhythm exercises using open strings
After 1ā2 months, theyāre often:
Playing melodies of real songs (from the Hal Leonard textbook)
Developing confidence and musical curiosity
The key is consistency and enjoyment. When learning is fun, kids want to keep going.
ā Is Your Child Ready?
You donāt need a āmusical prodigyā to start learning the guitar. Most kids are ready if they can:
Focus for 20ā30 minutes at a time
Show curiosity about music or instruments
Feel comfortable following simple instructions
The youngest age I teach is 6 years old. At this age, most students are able to overcome the biggest physical hurdle of guitar: pressing the strings.
In the first week or so of playing, your child may experience some finger discomfort. This is completely normal ā the skin on their fingertips just needs time to adjust. This discomfort usually fades after a week or two of regular playing as they begin to develop callouses.
Some parents join in for the first few lessons ā and thatās totally fine! I do my best to create a supportive, flexible space where each child can grow at their own pace.
šø Letās Try a Lesson!
I offer private online guitar lessons for kids from the age of 6 ā in English, Japanese, or both. Whether your child is brand new to music or wants to take their skills to the next level, Iād love to help.
Letās help your child build a lifelong connection with music. š¶
